A Third Person POV Dystopian trilogy where a country wants to control a world with religion and disease called the Fever. A prophecy holding the fate of Talusar and Cedre in its hands.

Elegy, the Second Daughter of the Sword of Cedre, discovers from her mother that she is receiving a prophecy from the Augurs, people who have received the Fever, but they do not side with either, but she did not know just how much this prophecy would change her life. At the day of the prophecy, she meets Rava Vidar, daughter of Ileth Vidar, a high-ranking military leader in Talusar, and a soldier.

“This prophecy concerns the future of your respective people. It assures victory for one of you over the other – and through you, victory for your people over the other’s.”

Additionally, the prophecy tells that they will also be fated to fall in love with a man. Elegy is against this because she is already married to Shir. Shir, however, my favorite side character to date, was accepting and understanding, knowing that this is apart of Elegy’s prophecy and destiny.

In Cedre, there are families from Talusar that escaped who did not want their children to be at the hands of the Fever. When “blessed” with the Fever, you have a 50% chance of surviving, but when you do survive, you will receive a unique ability. One of these children, Theren, will become the Knight for Elegy since this prophecy changes her life and fate. Originally, Elegy was to become the next Knight of Cedre for her sister, Larke, when it is her time to take over. However, with the new prophecy, Elegy is known as the Hope of Cedre, and Theren will be her knight.

Rava abducts all of the Talusar children who became soldiers, including Theren, and brings them back to Talusar to receive the Fever. Elegy and Shir escape with her mother, but both the Sword and Shir die during the attack.

Theren receives the Fever with the others, and him and two others survive, and once Elegy discovers that Theren was alive, she went to save him.

Theren and Shir have been some of my favorite Male Characters I have read this year. With Shir’s compassion and sympathy to Elegy and her prophecy and him protecting Elegy to the end made me SOB to a character that was only apart of the book for only 20% of the book. Theren’s personality before he was introduced to the Fever and even after didn’t really change besides his direction of understanding people. I really enjoyed how Theren kept his promise to Elegy throughout everything.

Theren even said, “I’m not your Knight, because you won’t have me, and I’m not bound by any oath, because the Fever swallows oaths, but neither of those things matter….My life is still forfeit to you. My life is still yours.”

I love how it was gently added that Theren was bisexual and was connected to his feelings for Fenn, but Fenn dying was very painful for me because while it didn’t necessarily show Theren was upset about his death, just learning and growing with his character I know he was way more upset than what was written.

This has definitely been one of my favorite books I have read of the year. Both Theren and Elegy characters were so well-written and developed I’m excited for the rest of the series to come out.
