Bleeding Sparks by Marissa Larae

Nalara Thorne is a thief. She became one after her parents mysteriously disappeared and her and her brother, Jay, started working to take care of their younger sister, Aria. Nalara and her best friend, Finn, work together to work with the Barri Prince in order to make some money by committing smuggling operations.
In their most recent mission, Finn and Nalara were taken by guard of Mire and brought them to the capital. At the capital, they were injected with Carmite, a special flower that gives prosperity to the nations, as well as give abilities to those who are injected with it.
She meets Oliver, her new roommate, who she absolutely despises because of where he is from. No matter what, Finn and Nalara both promised that they would never kill anyone. In order to survive and get back to her sister, Nalara and Finn work together to best Oliver, who is also after the one available position for the High King’s Table.
I really enjoyed this book. The character development was good, but I wish there was more about Finn and Oliver. I feel like if there was a bit more information about Finn’s character especially because of the ending.
The Isles location set up of the book was also interesting as well. Having 7 different islands, but the seventh of Gray Haven is always forgotten and ignored.
The end of the book was gruesome and honestly hard to read because of the child getting whipped. The character change for a lot of the characters, besides Inez and Slade, was very unexpected, but I’m glad it happened.
After reading this book, I started thinking about the parents and their disappearance. Were Nalara’s parents also taken to Mire? I hate not knowing the rest of the series, but it will definitely be one I continue to read.
What surprised me most about this book was the age of the author. She wrote this book in high school and published it shortly after graduating which is very impressive. I’m happy to know she will be continuing the series while she’s studying in college at Harvard.
